How to check a hospital surgery quotation before you say yes
A surgery estimate is easy to accept and hard to compare. This checklist helps a family read one calmly and ask the right questions.
Key facts
- Ask whether the price is a package or itemised, and what is excluded
- Check room category, days of stay and the implant or lens named
- Ask what could raise the final bill and get the answer in writing
- Check insurance: cashless network, pre-approval and room rent limits
- Compare with a second hospital quotation when you can
Package or itemised
A package gives one price for a defined bundle. An itemised estimate lists each charge. Ask which one this is, and what the price covers from admission to discharge.
Room and stay
Check the room category, such as shared, semi-private or private, and the number of days the estimate assumes. A longer stay or a room upgrade changes the bill.
Implants, lenses and consumables
For implants or lenses, ask the brand, type and whether there are choices at different prices. Ask what consumables and disposables are included.
Doctor, anaesthesia and tests
Confirm whether the surgeon, anaesthetist, assistants, pre-operative tests and follow-up visits are inside the estimate or charged separately.
What can raise the bill
Ask what happens if there is a complication, an extra day, an ICU stay or extra medicines. Ask how such charges are approved and explained before they are added.
Insurance
If the patient is insured, ask whether the hospital is on the cashless network, whether pre-approval is needed, and whether room rent limits or exclusions apply.
Compare and decide
Where time allows, get a second quotation for the same procedure and compare like for like. The treating doctor decides the right treatment; this guide is about the price, not medical advice.
Frequently asked questions
Is a package price always cheaper?
Not always. A package is easier to compare, but check what it excludes, because exclusions can add to the final bill.
Should I get a second quotation?
When time allows, yes. Comparing like for like on room, stay and implants shows whether the first quotation is reasonable.
Can Hassist help with this?
Yes. Pro and Max plan families can use Maya Negotiator to have the Hassist team check a quotation, negotiate and find alternatives.
Is this medical advice?
No. The doctor and the hospital decide the treatment and the final plan. This guide covers how to read the price only.
